10 Things to Look for in Wedding Photography

1. Only use photographers that are Full Time professionals. Beware of “part timers”! Only Full Time professionals invest for the long term and will be around for years to come. They will use the latest in equipment, techniques, products and styles. Yes, they may cost more but it’s worth every cent!

2. Make sure the photographers will realize YOUR wedding day vision.

Be comfortable that your photographers are listening to what YOU want captured and HOW you want it done rather than what they think is best. Multiple styles of images are best so that everyone will find something to love.

3. Be sure there are 2 photographers, preferably a male and a female.

2 photographers can literally be in 2 places at the same time! One photographer with the bride to capture her last minute tears of joy with mom or dad...while the other is ready for the groom’s first look at his bride walking down the aisle!

4. Interview the photographers that will actually be at your wedding.

Don’t be fooled by a slick salesman. Always be sure you are meeting with the people that will be there on your special day. Personality and chemistry between couples and their photographers is critical to a successful and stress-free wedding day!

5. Review album samples from your actual photographers.

Be wary of “Greatest Hits” albums. Be sure to see completed albums of the same wedding from start to finish. Make sure the samples you see are done by the photographers that will be at your wedding.

6. Ability to create a custom package that fits your needs and budget.

You should be able to customize your wedding contract so that you get only what you want and need. A professionally designed wedding album can cost $2000 or more so try to negotiate that into your package up front.

7. Be sure that your photographers are fully insured.

Who will be responsible if there is an accident involving your photographer?

8. Make sure the studio has backup plans for both people and equipment.

Stuff happens! Do your photographers carry a minimum of 2 additional sets of equipment to your wedding? What happens if they get sick the day before your wedding? There is only one chance to get your wedding day images right!

9. Membership in professional organizations like PPA or CPPA.

This is so important! Professional Photographers Association (PPA) and the Connecticut Professional Photographers Association (CPPA) provide access to the latest in education, trends, techniques, equipment, products and styles.

10. Online posting of your images is a must.

Relatives and friends will have the opportunity to view and purchase the images from your wedding. One less thing for your to worry about...or pay for! How cool is that!

Tonight I photographed Magdalena Slysz, Miss Polonia USA - the most beautiful Polish woman of this year . It was an honor and a pleasure. I had an awesome time photographing Magda; she really is a down to earth, intelligent and fun person.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to shine as much as I wanted as the session was fully directed with style and backgrounds by her peagent advisor. I am however very excited that we will have more sessions with Magda where they will be a little bit more free-style. (Can't wait!!).

Back from Tremblant

Well I have to admit I had a BLAST on our 5 day escape with the guys to Tremblant!! Where to start . . . the ride was worth the 7 hours, our condo in Tremblant village was fantastic - only a 5 minute walk to the lifts. The skiing was crazy with only being able to see 5 feet in front of us from half way to the top of the mountain. But I have to admit that skiing diamonds and not seeing more than 5 feet makes for a fearless and comfortable ride! The nightlife was an adventure, especially the last night. We had some serious laughs.

I will be posting some pictures when I get my little point and shoot back from a friend who mistakenly ended up holding on to it. Although I took my pro-camera, I didn't really have time take any amazing shots. It was way too cold to take it all the way up to the top, nor would it have been worth it with only being able to see 5 ft in front of us.

We did another photo shoot with Chelsea for her acting portfolio. She'll be auditioning in NY and needed a few head shots and we had some fun. The above is a small series; the second image can you guess what's happening? Yes, the typical teenage daughter not liking her mom fixing her (it was a funny image, I had to put it in).

Why are professional photographers so expensive?

(This article has been very well received by the photography community, and is now referred to by many Photography websites across the country)

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to a local drug store website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge $55 for an 8x10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drug store?

Here's why.

Simply put, you're not just paying for the actual photograph, you're paying for time and expertise. First, let's look at the actual time involved. If you don't read this entire page, at least read this first part.

For a two hour portrait session:

- one hour of travel to and from the session
- two hours of shooting
- 30 minutes of setup, preparation, talking to the client etc.
- 30 minutes to load the photos onto a computer (2 - 4 Gb of data)
- 30 minutes to back up the files on an external drive
- 3 - 4 hours of Photoshop time including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, saving a copy for print and a copy for the internet and backing up the edited photographs
- 2 - 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive their order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment and drop package off at Fed Ex.
- For local customers, we also print a set of all of their photos, and meet them at our studio to review the photos and place their order. Meeting and travel time averages 2 hours.

You can see how one two hour session easily turns into more than ten hours of work from start to finish. So when you see a Photographer charging a $200 session fee for a two hour photo shoot, you are not paying them $100 / hour.

For an eight hour wedding:

- I won't bore you with the details, but an eight hour wedding typically amounts to at least two to three full 40 hour work weeks worth of time. Again, if they are charging you $4,000 for an eight hour wedding, you are not paying them $500 / hour.

Now for the expertise.

Shooting professional photography is a skill, acquired through years of experience. Even though a quality camera now costs under $2,000 taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.

Most Professional Photographers take years to go from buying their first decent camera to making money with their photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera itself, there is a mountain of other equipment involved, as well as numerous software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website etc.

And let's not forget that you actually have to have people skills, be able to communicate, make people comfortable in front of the camera - and posing people to make them look their best in a photograph is a skill all by itself.

Think of it this way - the next time you pay $X to get your hair done, a pair of scissors only costs $1.50. But you gladly pay a lot more to hire a Professional.

What about the cheap studios at the mall?

Please don't compare us to the chain store studios. But if you must, consider all of the time and work that we put into our photographs, compared to what they do. Good luck getting a two hour photo shoot at a chain store. Not to mention they won't come to the beach! And of course, look at our work compared to theirs. You get what you pay for.

The truth is, most of the mall and chain store studios lose money. In fact, in 2007 Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios because of the financial drain they were putting on the company. What the chain stores bet on is that you'll come in for some quick and cheap photos, and while you're there, you'll also spend $200 on other things. They don't have to make money, they are just there to get you in the door.

Conclusion

We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local drug store.

It turns out that we never published this blog and for that we're deeply sorry =) Unfortunately, starting in August we start to go nuts (a little) since we're really hit the a high peak of our season that continues on till October.

Anyhow, we had a great time at this session . . . we weren't sure what was going to happen with the weather but all turned out good. Actually, just as we were wrapping up it started to rain.

And finally Round 3 . . . every wedding and every couple always knows someone who knows us or has crossed our path in the past. In this case, Greg is the son of one of Ania's Polish school teachers (so you might laugh, but Ania attended Polish Saturday school as a little girl; not that she really needed it at the time, but it kept her reading and writing in Polish and thus allowed her to be fluent to this day).

We had a blast photographing Greg and Sandra and can't wait for their wedding next September; and potentially taking pictures at a soccer field (Greg is a semi-professional soccer player so this is right up his alley).

Congrats you two and see you in less than one year!!

Round 2 - Jen and Chris were also a lot of fun to work with. The light was great and the park had really amazing colors (as you see below)... so we really were glad that we decided to risk it and stay at Wickham.

Gosia and Marek Photo Session

Our first of 3 e-sessions this past Thursday . . . we had a little mishap, not realizing OR checking, for that matter, if Wickham Park was still open. To our surprise it was closed...we broke a little sweat as we had planned on having 3 sessions there that day. Low and behold, we decided to risk it and park across the street in the visitor parking at the condo complex. It turned out that you can walk there, just the park is closed for the public in terms of parking.

All in all, we had a quick good session with Gosia and Marek. Both of them are very photogenic, and it was so easy to photograph them.

Our last wedding of the season . . . woohoo!! Not that weddings aren't fun and exciting for us, but they take up all of our Saturdays in the summer/fall...where most events happen to bo going on causing us to miss out on some very fun get-togethers and parties. BUT, this is the nature of our beast, if you will.

Anyhow, this was a great wedding to end the season with. We had so much fun with Kate and Matt at their e-session that we knew that we were going to have a blast at their wedding. And we did. Their entire bridal party was hysterical, cracking jokes, laughing all the way.

The weather was very unpredictable, but somewhat cooperative on those moments where we needed it to be. It was a day of scattered showers - LITERALLY. We were in and out at the getting ready location; it didn't rain when getting into the limos, nor going into church but it did in between. You get the picture.The ceremony took plact at St. Patrick's Cathedral (I have to admit I have never seen a better lit church than this one). Our formals were at the Norwich Free Academy (where we got to take some pictures inside the museum, check them out...this location was great).

One dramatic moment: during our formal pictures, Ania's 5D gave out...at first we couldn't figure out what happend, but after turning the camera on and off, then taking off the 70/200 lens, we knew what the problem was: the mirror fell out.

Imagine now not having a photographer with back-up equiptment ?!?!?! (SCARY)... luckily we have back-up for each one of us. So no worries there.

PDN PhotoPlus Fun

This past Thursday/Friday I had ventured up to NY for a PDN Photo Conference/Expo. Aside from checking out new vendors, renegotiating new contracts, attending training session, and basically being on my feet all day...in the evening we let loose =). Well, sortof...we hung out drinking beers, eating wings, cracking jokes and discussing business. It definitely was a riot.

Here are a few of my photographer friends (we took a picture at a photobooth for ha has) from your top left there is Stefan, then Olesya (right top), me trying to squeeze in the lower left corner, Mirek dead center and Matthew on the lower right.

I am highly interested in these albums . . . this is one of the products that we may be offering next year... (keep in mind, these pictures were taken with my little point and shoot). This year I only took one of my camera's to the expo for a free cleaning with CPS (the rest of my equiptment will be shipped to them). Who wants to lug around 15lbs with them all day =)

Amanda and Brian - Wedding at Great River Golf Club Milford CT

Second to last wedding of the season and the weather is killing all of us.... I can't remember what the exact temperature was but after being outside for 2 hours, I could say freezing!?!?? Lucky me, I had a jacket but poor Amanda, nothing but a wedding dress - major brownie points to her (and well to any bride who is willing to take pictures in such cold weather).
Overall the day turned out really nice . . . no rain, just cold wind.

Amanda and Brian were a lot of fun to work with...they were both very eager and willing to keep taking the pictures outside (despite the cold weather). The reception was at Great River Golf Club . . . we had some fun with pictures out on the course. Check out a sneak peak of the pictures below.

After Wedding Session with Asia & Jacek

Today we did a quick session with our good friends Asia and Jacek. Despite the very cold windy weather, we had a blast with them. Too bad that they didn't have more time to spend and hit a few more spots.

Meet Sylvia and Steve . . . Sylvia has an interesting heritage; Polish last name but doesn't speak a word, but rather is fluent in Italian - kind of fun! Anyways, we had a great time photographing the both of them; they are both very photogenic and easy to work with. We can't wait for their wedding next June.

After Wedding Session with Roksana and Bartosz

So you are probably thinking why the luggage?? They were venturing out on their honeymoon by foot in the deep blue sea...no just kidding of course. The suitcase was for a change of clothes after their session finished as well, it was rather chilly and driving 45 minutes back home in a wet, heavy, cold wedding dress isn't fun. (But the image is great, isn't it?)

We document Roksana and Bartek's wedding just a few weeks ago, and the original plan was to travel to Mt. Washington for their TTD session, but given the bad, cold weather that was coming on the days we planned on going, we decided it would be best just to stick to New Haven's Lighthouse point. (Here is a sneak peak).

Below: and they were brave enough to get almost fully got into water - brownie points!! (for me too as I had to get in waste length to capture this)

The waves were a bit rough, but the managed...

Nothing like being wet, cold, and now having sand all over!! I loved that they were open to rolling in the sand =)
Clean-up time (from the sand of course).

This was really a great session despite the cold. Enjoy the pictures; Roksana and Bartek you guys were fantastic!

Evelina and Shane E-session

We spent a couple hours on a bright, sunny October afternoon photographing Evelina and Shane, a couple that will marry next December. As you notice from the pictures, Shane is a sailer and came in his dress blues (it's always fun to photograph someone in uniform, it breaks away from the norm); and Evelina used to professionally model. We had two great models to photograph that day . . . and I have to say that they flowed into every position, place of movement I told them to make.

I had a splendid time photographing them.

For the first time we had to schedule a VERY early session with our clients, Amanda and Brian. Originally we were supposed to photograph the session at Wadsworth Mansion, but given the rain and cold tempurature the night prior, that location in the morning wasn't looking all the best. So we rerouted to Wesleyan Campus where we still had a good time and got some amazing fog backgrounds.

We can't wait to photograph them in two weeks . . .See you soon!!

We apologize for not having more photos posted from this wedding, they are coming soon. Aside from that, Agata and Marlon's wedding was very unique; from the custom made lines, to custom guestbook and pen holder to match the linens, to the custom made garter and ring pillow (also to match the linens), to the centerpiece and all the fine little details. Agata and Marlon make a wonderful couple. They are both funny, easy going and tons of fun. Actually, I have to say that the world is so small and you never know how your paths with past friends will cross. Ania and Agata went to grammer school, but never spoken or kept in touch beyond that. Then one day last year we get a phone call to schedule an appointment, and who knew. All in all, the wedding was super fun.

Congratulations you two, enjoy your honeymoon and we'll see you in two weeks for an after wedding session!!

After Wedding Session with Lauren and Andrew

We decided that it would be a good idea to get away from the beach scene and do something else for a change for a TTD session with Lauren and Andrew. And thus we went to a waterfall . . . I can't say the water was any warmer than in an ocean (you think it would be since its more enclosed, but no, it wasn't). The session was a lot of exciting and a bit dangerous walking around slippery rocks and such. We managed and really enjoyed ourselves with Lauren and Andrew.

Roksana and Bartosz Wedding

It turned out to be a beautiful day for Roksana and Bartek's wedding. Roksana looked amazing; I have been patiently waiting for someone to wear that net head piece for a wedding as I think they look so sexy and glamorous...and wha la, this wedding I had the opportunity to photograph it and make Roksana even more sexy and glamorous. The two of them make a wonderful couple and we wish them all the best on their new journey together.

Happy Anniversary to my wife Ania! We're celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary today. I decided to write about this today. I wanted to thank my wonderful myszka for being such a great wife who's loving, supportive, patient, and just an awesome person. I can't imagine being married to anyone else, and I'm glad that we can share our lives together. Yay!

UPDATE: To my amazingly patient husband (as I'm writing this a couple days after the fact); Kotek I love you for being you, for making me a better person, for improving my flaws and completing me as a whole. Thank you for being a great husband and father. I love you!! KiT

Melanie and Jason Trash The Dress session

Ta Da - you only get one as a teaser! More coming soon. All I can say, it was tons of fun - they are now considering other options (hmm...we'll see what we'll have in stock for you in the future). But for now, I'm so happy that Melanie talked Jason into doing this session as he admitted that it wasn't painful at all. (Makes you wonder, since when is taking photos painful or maybe it was the idea of cold water??) We're also very happy that Bob, their videographer, from BRB Video was able to make it to document this event for them. We can't wait to see them and us in action!! Thanks guys, it was a great time!!

Once again, I must apologize for not posting these up right away. We're really playing catch-up here... it has been a rough few days but slowly and surely we'll get there. If we haven't spoken or emailed you (we do apologize) just email us if you need something right away.

So more on this post...Kate and Matt - these two were simply put: crazy fun! We had quite a bit of laughs - especially when we asked them how many kids they wanted to have - Matt gave a a very untypical answer of 5 - Kate went with a standard 2 =) (nothing wrong with that). 5 is a good number (I'm one of 7 and Ania is 1 out of 4, so 5's the number).

We can't wait for their wedding this end of October!!

Wiola and Adam - Engagement Session

I had a good time photographing Wiola and Adam. For a change, I tried a new location close to where I live (not to shabby, actually, it was kind of interesting). The weather started out iffy but it somehow worked itself out and didn't start raining till close to midnight. Beata looked amazing, and Matt - well very well put together and stunning. Emilia and Manny's Wedding -Danbury CT - Portuguese Cultural Center

Here we go again...another Portuguese wedding =) yay!! They are so much fun, the people, the dancing and all the food (especially lobster, pig roast, etc). Emilia and Manny had their share of 'fun' (is probably the most PC word I could use) events . . . down to their limo catching fire at the park. (After the fact, I have to admit it was pretty funny - perhaps not so much while it was all happening). The best part it, no one thought twice not to get back into that limo and drive halfway to meet another limo to get them to the hall.

Low and behold, the wedding day finished off smoothly. Emilia looked beautiful; Manny was very stunning - the two make such a wonderful couple. Check out some photos from the day.

After finishing up shooting a VIP client during the day...sorry can't say who!?! . . . we had the views as you see below. Other than working a bit, the business trip turned out to be a lot of fun; especially bringing along my wife and son =). We did a little bit of sight seeing; a walk on the cliff walk; dinner on the marina; it was all a good time.

We decided that we liked Newport so much, we'll have to make a vacation out of it next year.

After Wedding brunch with Basia & Albert /Holyoke, MA

Well another friend's wedding we missed... it really sucks to be always working on all those summer weekends when family and friend events are going on but all is well. At least we made it to their brunch the next day. The photo above is Albert, Basia and us. (Basia is also our pediatrician's daughter; Basia is also studying to be a pediatrician) In just a few minutes they were off to their honeymoon - Vietnam and Bali (exciting, right??)

Below are some random shots (we didn't take too many, just really wanted to enjoy ourselves). And also one with Pawel Szajda (Basia's brother) . . . just as an FYI, Pawel an actor played in many movies thus far. Amongst a few are 'Under the Tuscan Sun', 'Sweet Rush'/Tatarak (Polish movie by Andrzej Wajda most known director), 'Venom', 'Death without Consent', and some TV series (Hope and Faith, Generation Kill).

Anyhow, it was great to see them all and a few other friends we haven't seen in a while.

Right after our e-esession on the beach this evening, we took 5 minutes to take a few photos of our baby at sunset . . . Ania specifically brought a sweat-outfit just in case we had a moment =) I love him in his little coordinated outfits.

This past Monday I did Kasia and Vadim's e-session at Gilette Castle . . . not only are they are great couple and photograph well, they are professional dancers. They did a mini dance at the session and they were awesome!! I felt like I was at Dancing with the Stars! I literally can't wait to see them perform on their wedding day. Not that I'm sure it will be performing as for them it will be pure fun, but for me it will be a performance. I'm sure Kasia is going to look spectacular dancing like on clouds in her wedding gown. Both of them have great talent, and if you ever need dance lessons for any occasion or for fun they are the ones (they teach and have a dancing school).

Lauren & Andrew's Wedding at Anthony's Ocean View

Remember this couple...they hit our main webpage (with Andrew's tatoos). We apologize for not writing anything sooner and for the lack of photos - we really have been swamped trying to get the wedding images out to everyone amongst doing 50 billion other things.

Anyhow, Lauren and Andrew are just naturals at this 'posing' stuff as some say . . . it's not really posing, it's simply having fun, enjoying each other and perhaps acting to a directed comment from us This is exactly what these two did, they just have fun. Also, I have to add that their wedding was beautifully themed together. From the pictures on the beach, to starfish name tags, amazing beachy decorations, shells on all table numbers and much much more.

Ela and Konrad's Wedding - Greek Hall New Britain

This past Saturday we photographed Konrad and Ela's wedding . . . yet another photographer (from visual.obsession). As you can probably tell from the photos below, Konrad and Ela love to have fun while being photographed - the both of them were creating funny faces, moves, and poses; especially during our quick 15 minute formal photo session at Trinity College in Hartford. It was so much fun to photograph them and we got some fun shots.

So this is funny - we went to Ela's house first, then to Konrad's and back to Ela's. On our way to Konrad we had to stop and save this poor little turtle wondering in the middle of the road.

The tradition here is that Konrad comes to greet Ela and bring her bouquet at her house . . . but it wasn't just any meet and greet, we had the whole band playing in the background and lots of family watching

Well - this was hysterical ... as the Ela and Konrad were feeding each other, the band was singing "Bride feeds the groom, etc, then the Groom feeds the Bride, etc, and then they sang "and now the Groom feeds the videographer.... " and so the videographer got fed =) I got a bit too!!

Hmm... I didn't think I drank that much?!? There are two of them . . . (jk, these two twin sisters looked totally identical)
More fun at the reception. There were big glasses, blown up gitars and other fun toys to play and dance with . . everyone was having a blast (as were we).
This one is a bit hard to explain to only the english speaking (so I'm just going to ruin it as it looses the meaning and fun)... all you Poles know what I'm talking about.
